Sanjiang College is located in the "Ancient Capital of Six Dynasties"-Nanjing, a famous historical and cultural city. It is a provincial undergraduate university approved by the Ministry of Education. It is the first private undergraduate university in Jiangsu Province and one of the first four private undergraduate universities in the country.

The name of Sanjiang College can be traced back to Sanjiang Normal School (the predecessor of Southeast University and Nanjing University) in 1902. In March 1992, Tao Yongde and Qi Huanlin of Southeast University, Ding Chenghan of Nanjing University, and Xie Mingcai of Nanjing Workers University, four retired and about to retire professors, and education management cadres initiated and established Sanjiang University. In June 1993, the Jiangsu Provincial Government agreed to prepare for the establishment of Sanjiang University. In February 2002, it was upgraded to an undergraduate university approved by the Ministry of Education and named Sanjiang College. When Sanjiang College was founded, it established the leadership and management system of the principal responsibility system under the leadership of the board of directors. Professor Qian Zhonghan, the former dean of Nanjing Institute of Technology, served as the first chairman, and the former president of Nanjing University, Professor Kuang Yaming, served as the honorary president.
