Changsha Vocational and Technical College of Environmental Protection, founded in 1979, is my country’s first national public full-time higher vocational college for environmental protection and a model higher vocational college in Hunan Province. It is a higher vocational college jointly established by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and the Hunan Provincial People’s Government. The college, located in Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province, is known as the "cradle of Chinese environmental guards". It is the first batch of vocational colleges in the country to obtain ISO9001: 2015 quality management system certification. In recent years, it has successively won more than 100 honors such as "National Environmental Education Demonstration School", "National May Fourth Red Flag Youth League Committee", "Hunan Province Civilized Colleges", "Hunan Province General College Graduate Employment Work Outstanding Unit" and other honors.
The college covers an area of more than 550 acres, with a construction area of more than 191,000 square meters, and a total asset value of 260 million yuan. Environmental protection equipment is the most complete and advanced among scientific research institutes and universities in Hunan Province. There are nearly 9,000 students enrolled nationwide. Since the establishment of the school in 1979, the number of graduates of the college has reached more than 50,000. Today, most of the environmental protection backbones of the environmental protection bureaus in the counties and cities of Hunan Province are graduates of the environmental protection vocational colleges. There are 5,000 environmental protection cadres in the environmental protection industry across the country. There are more than 15,000 people including grassroots environmental protection technology backbones, monitoring and law enforcement personnel.
Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core has incorporated the construction of ecological civilization into the overall layout of the “five in one” and “four comprehensive” strategic layouts of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and the cause of ecological environmental protection has been developed by leaps and bounds. At present, ecological environment management, ecological civilization construction, and environmental protection industry development all urgently need the support of a large number of professional and technical personnel. According to statistics, more than 150,000 relevant practitioners are needed each year. The college adheres to the school-running philosophy of "practice integrates teaching and technology serves the society", and vigorously cultivates environmental protection talents. Hundreds of large and medium-sized environmental protection companies in Changsha-Zhutan, the Pearl River Delta, and the Yangtze River Delta have carried out school-enterprise cooperation with the college, providing more than 6,000 jobs each year, and the college's annual supply of nearly 3,000 graduates exceeds demand. In the past three years, nearly 11,000 students have passed vocational appraisal examinations for 43 types of work and high-tech examinations for 8 projects, and the vocational skills acquisition rate has exceeded 90%. Students have repeatedly achieved good results in various vocational skill competitions at or above the provincial level. They have won 15 national first prizes and 6 provincial first prizes. This is not only a stage for teachers to provide technical services and practice to the outside world, but also a platform for students to learn about enterprises and develop employment and entrepreneurship.
