Hunan Women’s College, formerly known as Hunan Women’s Vocational University, was founded in 1985 and was upgraded to a full-time general undergraduate college approved by the Ministry of Education on March 18, 2010. It is the first public full-time women’s general college after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. One of the three independent undergraduate colleges for women in the country, the All-China Women's Federation and the Hunan Provincial People's Government jointly established a college, a member of the World Women's Education League, and a member of the China Women's University League.
The establishment and development of the school is inseparable from the high level of care from governments and leaders at all levels. At the beginning of the school’s establishment, Hu Yaobang, the former General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, inscribed the school’s name and inscribed “The prosperity of the motherland requires more women talents”; former President Liu Shaoqi’s wife, and former CPPCC Standing Committee member Wang Guangmei served as the school’s honorary principal before his death; nationwide Chen Muhua, Peng Peiyun, Gu Xiulian, and Chen Zhili, vice chairmen of the National People's Congress and chairmen of the All-China Women's Federation, came to the school to inspect and guide the work.
The school is located in the historical and cultural city of Changsha, adjacent to the Provincial People's Government, covering an area of 370,200 square meters. The library has 1.0496 million paper books and 672,600 e-books. There are 13 on-campus experimental training and teaching centers, and 99 off-campus practice bases. There is a multi-functional gymnasium with complete sports supporting facilities for teaching. The campus is shaded by green trees, and the birds and flowers are scented.
There are 651 faculty members, 499 teachers, and 417 full-time teachers. Among the full-time teachers, there are 51 with senior professional titles and 137 with deputy senior titles; 56 teachers with doctoral degree and 295 teachers with master's degree. It has high-level experts and scholars, such as national-level candidates for the New Century Talent Project, experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, national-level teaching teachers, candidates for the New Century Excellent Talent Support Program of the Ministry of Education, and Hunan New Century 121 Talent Project candidates.
The school has established a multi-disciplinary system of coordinated development of literature, management, art, law, economics, pedagogy, engineering, etc., and a distinctive feature of women’s education. The key construction disciplines of the Second Five-Year Plan include Sociology, Business Administration, and Design, 3 Hunan Province "Double First Class" construction and application characteristic disciplines. There are 6 colleges, 29 undergraduate majors, 2 special majors set up by the Ministry of Education, 3 provincial-level professional comprehensive reform pilot projects, and 1 provincial-level funding construction characteristic major. It recruits students from 20 provinces and cities across the country, with nearly 10,000 students.

The school has been rated as "Advanced Unit for Employment of General College Graduates in Hunan Province" and "Excellent Unit for Employment in General Colleges and Universities in Hunan Province". The employment rate of graduates in the past three years has exceeded the average level of the province. Nearly 50,000 graduates have been transported.
The school insists on opening up schools and actively carries out international cooperation and exchanges. It has signed friendly cooperation agreements with 23 universities or institutions in the United States, Australia, Japan, Russia and other countries and regions, established cooperative education and inter-school exchanges, and fully developed teachers and students Cooperation projects such as overseas study visits, research and training, training, and exchanges have become important windows for international exchanges on women/gender studies and women’s education in my country.
The school has the first batch of women/gender research and training bases in the country, the research base of civic etiquette quality in Hunan Province, the research base of women's culture in Hunan Province, the research base of higher education disciplines (women's education) in Hunan Province, and the research of modern home economics education in Hunan Province. The base and other 5 provincial and above research bases and 20 school-level research institutions have built the first female education development history museum in China.
