Hunan Institute of Technology is located in Hengyang, the second largest city in Hunan Province, one of the birthplaces of Hunan culture, and the central city of southern Hunan. It was approved by the Ministry of Education in 2007 by the merger of Hunan College of Building Materials and Hunan University Hengyang Branch. Provincial public general undergraduate colleges and universities, Hunan Industrial Science and Technology Workers College was integrated in March 2010 as a whole. It is the youngest undergraduate college to implement the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" in the country, and it is a master's degree granting project construction unit in Hunan Province. The school serves local economic and social development, based in Hunan and facing the whole country. It is a work-oriented, coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as engineering, economics, management, arts, science and art. The school has three campuses, covering an area of more than 1,400 acres, with a school building area of more than 560,000 square meters. The total value of teaching and research equipment is 215 million yuan, and the library has more than 1.57 million paper books.
The school currently has 19,009 full-time students. There are 1288 faculty members, including 115 with senior professional titles (103 professors), 321 associate professors (223 associate professors), and more than 870 doctors and masters. The school is qualified to recruit international students in China, and the electrical engineering and automation jointly organized with the University of Sunderland in the United Kingdom is a Sino-foreign cooperative education project approved by the Ministry of Education.
