Hunan First Normal University is known as "a thousand-year-old school and a century-old teacher". Its predecessor was Changsha Chengnan Academy, founded in 1161 by Zhang Shi, a famous philosopher in the Southern Song Dynasty. It was established as Hunan Normal University in 1903 and held modern teacher education. In 1912 The name was changed to Hunan Public First Normal School. In 1949, it was renamed Hunan First Normal School. In 2008, it was upgraded to undergraduate. In 2019, it was listed as the first batch of colleges and universities for undergraduate admissions in Hunan Province. It is the birthplace of Hunan culture and the cradle of modern Chinese normal education. The school has a glorious revolutionary tradition.
