Hunan University of Technology is a comprehensive university with a history of running schools for more than 60 years. In February 2006, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school was renamed Hunan University of Technology from Zhuzhou Institute of Technology. In the same year, Zhuzhou Teachers College and Hunan Metallurgical Vocational and Technical College were merged.
The school features packaging education. It is the first member unit accepted by the International Packaging Association (IAPRI) in China, the director unit of the Packaging Education Committee of the China Packaging Federation, and the only vice president unit of the China Packaging Federation among universities across the country. In 1995, as the first batch of pilot institutions, the school took the lead in passing the qualification assessment of undergraduate teaching work by the former State Education Commission. In 2003, the school was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as a master's degree-granting unit. In 2008, it was evaluated as an excellent university for undergraduate teaching level evaluation by the Ministry of Education; in 2009, it was qualified for the admission of foreign students; in 2010, it passed the quality evaluation of the postgraduate training process with excellent results; in 2013, it was awarded the "National Top 50 Universities with Typical Employment Experience for Graduates" ; At the end of 2013, he was awarded the enrollment right for the "Doctoral Talent Training Program for Special Needs of the Country", and began to recruit doctoral students in 2014.
The school currently has 2 campuses with a total area of 3853.7 mu. The total construction area of the library is 55,430.29 square meters, with a collection of more than 2,793,500 books; the total value of teaching and research equipment is 365 million yuan, and 7,904 teaching computers. The school has a more advanced computer network service system, and has built standard plastic track and field stadiums, gymnasiums and various sports venues that meet the needs of physical education.
The school has 22 teaching colleges and 1 independent college. The school has established a discipline system focusing on engineering and coordinated development of engineering, science, management, literature, economics, law, education, and art. It has 5 disciplines including biomedical engineering, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and civil engineering. Key disciplines in Hunan Province; 10 provincial and ministerial key laboratories including "Biomedical Nanomaterials and Devices", "Advanced Packaging Materials and Technology", "Product Packaging Innovation Industrial Design Center", "Packaging Design Art and Technology Research" Base" and other 7 provincial and ministerial research bases; and Hunan Fifth Engineering Co., Ltd. and Zhuzhou Xiawan Building Materials Co., Ltd. jointly established Hunan Engineering Technology Research Center for "Building Wall Energy-saving New Materials"; and CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive The Research Institute Co., Ltd. and other high-tech enterprises have jointly built the "Hunan University Graduate Training Innovation Base" and the "Hunan University Industry-University-Research Cooperation Demonstration Base".
In recent years, the school has undertaken a total of 10 national education reform projects, 235 provincial and ministerial education reform projects; won 1 national teaching achievement award, 41 provincial teaching achievement awards; 5 provincial key disciplines, 10 provinces Ministerial key laboratories, 13 provincial and ministerial research bases (including technology centers); 12,407 academic research papers have been published, 971 of which have been included by SCI, EI, ISTP; 234 national-level scientific research projects have been undertaken, provincial and ministerial level 1223 scientific research projects; 4 second-class national scientific and technological progress prizes, 1 first-class natural science prize of Hunan Province, 73 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological achievement prizes, and 766 patents. The "Special Indoor Environment Purification Key Technology and Complete Equipment Industrialization Development" project led by the school was awarded the third batch of major scientific and technological projects by the Provincial Department of Science and Technology in 2010. "Key energy-saving technologies and demonstrations in cold winter and hot summer regions" won the national "Twelfth Five-Year" scientific and technological support project funding.
The school established Dongguan Packaging College in Guangdong Province as the school’s practical teaching base and talent service window in coastal areas; the "Global Low-Carbon Cities Joint Research Center" jointly established with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences through a survey of nearly 100 cities across the country, Completed China's low-carbon city rankings, a major scientific research project. Since 2011, it has jointly issued the "Green Paper on China's Low-Carbon City Development" every year; signed a comprehensive scientific and technological cooperation agreement with the Zhuzhou Municipal People's Government, and organized 11 projects in charge People signed an industry-university-research cooperation agreement with relevant units in Zhuzhou City; established comprehensive cooperative relations with well-known domestic high-tech enterprises such as Zhuzhou CSR Times Group and Zhuzhou Qingshuitang Circular Economy Demonstration Zone and key national construction areas; the school also undertook the "2010 Beijing International "Packaging Expo·China Packaging Education Exhibition" and other large-scale international academic conferences.
Currently, the school cooperates with Arizona State University, State University of New York, California State University, University of Akron, University of Derby, Lincoln University, Macquarie University, Australia, University of New South Wales, University of Applied Sciences Stuttgart, Yonsei University, South Korea, Sacred Springs University in Japan, University of Malaya in Malaysia, Nelson Mandela Institute for African Science and Technology in Tanzania, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and other well-known overseas universities and research institutions have established extensive scientific research cooperation and academic exchange relationships; and More than ten domestic universities such as Southeast University and Central South University jointly cultivate doctoral students.
