Xiangtan University, founded in 1958, is a comprehensive national key university initiated by a great man, Comrade Mao Zedong. On September 10 of the same year, Comrade Mao Zedong personally inscribed the name of "Xiangtan University" and cordially urged that "Xiangtan University must be run well". In 1974, Deng Xiaoping, Li Xiannian and other central leaders approved the resumption of Xiangtan University. In 1978, the school was designated by the State Council as one of the 16 comprehensive key universities in the arts, sciences, and sciences.
