Hunan University is located in Changsha, a famous historical and cultural city in China. The campus is located on the shore of the Xiangjiang River and under the Yuelu Mountain. It enjoys the reputation of "a thousand-year-old university and a century-old school". The school has a long history of running a school and an excellent educational tradition. It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, a national "211 Project" and "985 Project" key construction university, and a national "World Class University" construction university.
Hunan University originated from the Yuelu Academy, founded in 976 AD. Through the changes of Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, it has always maintained the continuity of cultural education and teaching. In 1903, it was restructured into Hunan Higher School. In 1926, it was named Hunan University. In 1937, it became one of the 16 national universities under the Ministry of Education of the National Government. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Li Da, a representative of the “First National Congress of the Communist Party of China” and educator, became the first president of Hunan University in New China, and Comrade Mao Zedong wrote the name of the school. In 2000, Hunan University merged with Hunan University of Finance and Economics to form the new Hunan University.
