Central South University of Forestry and Technology is a university jointly established by the People's Government of Hunan Province and the State Forestry and Grassland Administration, an excellent university in the evaluation of undergraduate teaching level of the Ministry of Education, a university of the national "Basic Ability Construction Project for Universities in the Midwest", and a "domestic first-class university" in Hunan Province. .

One of the predecessors of the school was the Hunan Forestry College established in Changsha in 1958. In 1963, under the kind care of the older generation of proletarian revolutionary Comrade Tao Zhu, Hunan Forestry College moved to Guangzhou and merged with the Department of Forestry of South China Agricultural College (now South China Agricultural University) to establish Central South Forestry College. Comrade Tao Zhu personally determined the school site, outlined the blueprint, and inscribed the school name. In 1970, Central South Forestry College merged with South China Agricultural College to form Guangdong Agriculture and Forestry College. In 1974, the school moved from Guangzhou to Xupu County, Hunan Province and changed its name to Hunan Forestry College. In 1978, the school restored the name of Central South Forestry College and was directly under the management of the former Ministry of Forestry. In 1981 the school moved to Zhuzhou City, Hunan Province. In 2000, the former Hunan Forestry School and Hunan Forestry Technical School were merged into Central South Forestry College, and the school was transferred to Hunan Province and the former Ministry of Forestry. In 2003, Hunan Agricultural Machinery Research Institute was merged into Central South Forestry College, and the main body of the school moved to Changsha, achieving a historic return. In 2005, it was renamed Central South University of Forestry and Technology approved by the Ministry of Education. In 2006, it merged with the former Hunan Economic Management Cadre College to form the new Central South University of Forestry and Technology.


The school has a graduate school and 24 teaching units, and currently has 76 undergraduate majors, including 12 national first-class majors, 4 national characteristic majors, and 26 provincial-level first-rate majors. There are currently 6 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degree, 20 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degree, 15 authorized categories for master's degree, and 5 post-doctoral research stations.
