The school was founded in 1972, and its predecessor was Workers University established by Dongfeng Motor Group Co., Ltd. (formerly China's Second Automobile Manufacturing Plant). As an institution of higher learning that accompanies the growth, development and expansion of the national automobile industry, the school was approved by the State Council as a full-time general undergraduate institution in 1983 and was officially named Hubei Automotive Industry Institute.
