Wuhan Textile University came into being in response to the call for the revitalization of the national light industry in New China. Its predecessor was Wuhan Textile Institute of Technology, which was founded in 1958, and was renamed Wuhan Institute of Science and Technology in 1999. The former Hubei Provincial School of Foreign Trade and Hubei College of Finance and Economics were merged successively, and in 2010 it was renamed Wuhan Textile University.
