Three Gorges University was approved by the Ministry of Education and was formed by the merger of the former Wuhan University of Water Conservancy and Electric Power (Yichang) and the former Hubei Three Gorges University on May 25, 2000. The predecessor of the former Wuhan University of Water Conservancy and Electric Power (Yichang) was the Gezhouba School of Hydropower Engineering, which was established in 1978. Wuhan University of Water Conservancy and Electric Power has become an important part of the "211 Project" construction university. The original Hubei Three Gorges College was formed by the merger of the original Yichang Teachers College, Yichang Medical College, and Yichang Vocational University in 1996.
The history of the school can be traced back to 1923. It started to hold undergraduate education in 1978 and was the first batch of bachelor's degree-granting units in the country. It began to hold postgraduate education in 1996 and cultivated doctoral students in 1998. The school enrolls students from 31 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the Central Government and more than 60 countries (regions), and has entered a full-scale enrollment in the whole country.
