Wuhan Institute of Physical Education, formerly known as Zhongnan Institute of Physical Education, was one of the first batch of independent full-time general higher sports colleges after the founding of New China. It was established in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province in 1953, moved to Wuhan, Hubei Province in 1955, and renamed in 1956.
