Harbin Petroleum Institute was founded in 2003 and was originally called Huarui College of Daqing Petroleum Institute. In 2012, it was independently established as a general undergraduate university and renamed Harbin Petroleum Institute with the approval of the Ministry of Education, with the right to grant bachelor's degrees.
