Hainan University is a comprehensive key university formed by the merger of the former South China Tropical Agriculture University and the former Hainan University in August 2007. It is a university "jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Hainan Province".

The former South China University of Tropical Agriculture was founded in 1958 and is closely integrated with the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences founded in 1954. It is also called the "Two Institutes of Hot Crops" (South China Institute of Tropical Crops and South China Institute of Tropical Crops), and is known as my country's tropical agriculture "Gemini" in the field of science and education.
