Kaili College is located in Kaili City, Guizhou Province, the state capital of the Splendid Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, known as the "state of forest, state of singing and dancing, and state of magic". It is a full-time public undergraduate approved by the Ministry of Education. Ordinary universities are the pilot units for the transformation and development of general undergraduate universities in Guizhou Province to application-oriented development and the construction units for granting master's degrees in the "13th Five-Year Plan" of Guizhou Province.
The school originated from Qiandongnan University, founded in 1958. Together with Yanbian University and Jishou University, it is one of the three ethnic higher education institutions established by the state in the minority autonomous prefecture. The name of the school has undergone several changes. In 2006, it was upgraded to a general undergraduate college approved by the Ministry of Education, and rebuilt from Qiandongnan Normal College for Nationalities to Kaili College; in 2008, the school was relocated to the new campus of Kaili Economic Development Zone. In 2010, it passed the evaluation of the bachelor's degree awarding unit. Passed the qualification assessment of undergraduate teaching work by the Ministry of Education in 2015, and passed the review and assessment of undergraduate teaching work by the Ministry of Education in 2019. The school occupies an area of 1,676 acres with a building area of 325,000 square meters. The total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is 124 million yuan, with a collection of 1.084 million paper books and more than 3.82 million e-books (of which more than 930,000 mirror e-books and more than 2.89 million master and doctoral papers).
The school has always adhered to the "three characteristics and three types" (locality, nationality, teacher-oriented, application-oriented, teaching-oriented, and open-oriented) orientation of running a school. There are 18 colleges and 11,115 students. There are 56 undergraduate majors, covering education, engineering, science, literature, management, art, agriculture and other disciplines. Among them, 1 national-level comprehensive reform pilot major, 2 provincial-level characteristic majors, 8 provincial-level comprehensive reform majors, 3 provincial-level outstanding talent training program majors, 1 provincial-level first-class major, and first-class construction in Guizhou Province Cultivate 1 discipline, 8 provincial-level key (featured key, key support) disciplines, and 11 school-level key disciplines.
The school vigorously implements the strategy of "strengthening the school with talents". The school focuses on the integration of science and education and innovative development. There are 17 teaching and scientific research platforms at various levels, including 3 provincial key laboratories, 1 provincial university key laboratory, 1 provincial academician workstation, 1 provincial collaborative innovation center, and provincial key laboratories. There are 3 experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 provincial-level national ancient book research base, 1 provincial-level bilingual service base, 4 provincial-level university production-study-research bases, and a key research base of Dong studies in Southeast Guizhou and a state-level think tank "Southeast Guizhou" Development Research Institute". At the same time, it has the "National Excellent Journal of Local Colleges and Universities"-"Journal of Kaili University" and the first "RCCSE China Core Academic Journal" named after "Original Ethnic Culture"-"Original Ethnic Culture Journal". In recent years, 58 national-level scientific research projects have been approved; 46 scientific and technological achievements awards above the provincial and ministerial level have been awarded, more than 8,000 academic papers have been published, 404 academic monographs have been published, and 258 patents have been authorized.
The school insists on opening up schools. It recruits students from 15 provinces (municipalities and autonomous regions) across the country, and has established international student exchange programs and college student summer camps with more than 10 universities in the United States, Russia and some countries in Southeast Asia. Since 1992, it has recruited international students and has trained more than 300 degree students, language students, and exchange students from Germany, South Korea, Thailand, Laos, Indonesia, Cambodia and other countries. In 2020, it signed a cooperation agreement with Guizhou Zhongke Hantianxia Electronics Co., Ltd. to jointly build the Institute of Microelectronics and Artificial Intelligence, and signed a strategic cooperation agreement with China Industry Holding Group Co., Ltd. to jointly build the Cambodian branch of Kaili College, and held the China-ASEAN Education Exchange Week Activities such as the "China-ASEAN University Student Tourism Image Ambassador Selection" have aroused widespread public concern.
The school has been selected as the first batch of pilot universities in the Ministry of Education’s “Scientific Work Ability Enhancement Program (Ten Million Project)”; "Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritance Crowd Training School", "National Demonstration Academician Expert Workstation", "The First National Defense Education Characteristic School", "National Staff Education and Training Demonstration Site", the first batch of "green universities" in Guizhou Province, and the first batch of "Green Universities" in Guizhou Province.
