Founded on May 17, 1951, Guizhou University for Nationalities is affiliated to the People’s Government of Guizhou Province. It is one of the earliest ethnic colleges and universities established in New China. Government scholarships come to China for foreign students to train colleges and universities. The school has two campuses. The Huaxi campus is located in Huaxi District, Guiyang City, a scenic area known as the “Pearl of the Plateau”. The land area is 2825 acres and there are more than 20,000 full-time students. Since the establishment of the school, more than 150,000 talents of all levels and types have been trained for the society, providing important talent support for the economic and social development of Guizhou and ethnic areas.
The school currently has 87 general undergraduate majors, 10 first-level academic master degree authorization points, 9 types of professional degree master points in 18 fields, and 1 "Doctoral Program for Training Talents for National Special Needs". There are 1,758 faculty members, of which 167 are senior professional titles, 714 are deputy senior professional titles; 530 are with doctoral degree and 864 are with master's degree. Among them, there are national-level candidates for the “Hundreds and Thousands of Talents Project”, young and middle-aged experts with outstanding national contributions, cultural masters of the Central Propaganda Department and “four batches” of talents, Chinese arts and crafts masters, experts enjoying special allowances from the State Council, and new talents from the Ministry of Education. There are nearly 100 outstanding scientific and technological talents of the century, provincial core experts, "Qianling scholars" in philosophy and social sciences of provincial universities, provincial management experts, experts enjoying special allowances from the provincial government, academic leaders of philosophy and social sciences in provincial universities, and famous teaching teachers of provincial universities.
The school has established cooperative relations with universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, the Netherlands, Malaysia and other countries and universities in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan to carry out student exchanges, academic exchanges, cooperative education, teacher training and Scientific research cooperation, etc. In 2014, it was approved by the Ministry of Education as a Chinese government scholarship host institution for international students in China. Existing from the United States, Russia, South Korea, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Thailand, Rwanda, Bangladesh, Nepal, Tajikistan, Lithuania, Egypt, India, Philippines, Indonesia, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, There are more than 300 international students from 24 countries including Myanmar.
The school has been rated as a model unit for national unity and progress by the State Council 5 times, as a national civilized unit and a national civilized campus 3 times, and 17 times as a national college student summer vacation "Three Countryside" by the Central Propaganda Department, the Communist Youth League Central Committee and the Ministry of Education. The advanced unit of social practice has successively won the national "three-five" and "fourth five-year" legal system propaganda and education advanced unit, the national economical public institution demonstration unit, and the Ministry of Education's law-based school management demonstration school. The school’s party committee has been rated as the province’s advanced party committee three times, and the school has been rated as the Guizhou National Unity and Progress Advanced Collective, Guizhou Civilized Unit, Guizhou Spiritual Civilization Construction Advanced Collective, Guizhou Beautiful Campus, and Guizhou Green University.
