Zunyi Medical University was founded in 1947. It is the first medical undergraduate college founded by the Communist Party of China after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War. It used to use the names of Guandong Medical College, Dalian University Medical College, and Dalian Medical College. In 1969, to support the "third-line" construction, the school moved to Zunyi City, Guizhou Province as a whole, and was renamed Zunyi Medical College. In 2018, it was renamed Zunyi Medical University. After more than 70 years of construction and development, it has become a provincial university with medical-oriented, multi-disciplinary support, distinctive school-running characteristics and strong school-running capabilities. It is a university jointly established by the National Health Commission (formerly the National Health and Family Planning Commission) and the People’s Government of Guizhou Province. Pilot universities for the reform of the postgraduate training model for master's professional degrees. The school consists of three campuses: Xinpu Campus, Dalian Road Campus, and Zhuhai Campus. It covers an area of about 2515 acres and has more than 19,000 full-time students. The school's undergraduate education covers 6 disciplines, including medicine, science, engineering, education, management, and literature, and 31 undergraduate majors. There are 4 national first-class majors and 4 characteristic majors, 1 national quality course, national quality resource sharing course, national quality video open course, 3 national virtual simulation experimental projects, 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, national-level One virtual simulation experiment teaching center and one national off-campus practice education base for college students. The clinical medicine professional certification has a 7-year validity period, the nursing professional certification has a 6-year validity period, and the dental medicine professional has passed the certification with high quality.
The school began enrolling graduate students in 1955 and was the first batch of master's degree authorized units in the country after the resumption of the college entrance examination in 1981. Since 1999, it has cooperated with Chongqing Medical University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Soochow University, Guizhou University and other universities to train doctoral students. At present, postgraduate education covers 4 disciplines, including medicine, science, engineering, and law. There are 8 first-level discipline master degree authorization points, 43 second-level discipline master degree authorization points, and 4 professional master degree authorization points. In 2015, the International Education College (Guizhou-ASEAN Medical Education College) was established to actively develop education for international students, and its international influence continues to increase. In 2018, the Zunyi Education and Health Cadre College was established, joined the "Red Medical Alliance" and became the vice chairman unit. The red cultural heritage and the school's ideological and political work are deeply integrated and developed.
The school takes the double-class construction as the starting point and strives to strengthen the connotation construction. Pharmacology is a national key (cultivation) discipline. Clinical medicine is the first medical discipline in Guizhou Province to enter the ESI global top 1%; won the National Higher Education Teaching Achievement Award in 2018 1 second prize; in 2019, he won the special prize of postgraduate teaching achievement in Guizhou Province. "Big Health Medicine Discipline Group" was selected as the first-class discipline group in Guizhou Province. Clinical medicine and pharmacy are the first-class discipline group in Guizhou Province. The school has entered the top 200 universities in mainland China in the 2020 Natural Index Ranking, ranking 187th. Clinical medicine, basic medicine, and pharmacy have entered the top 50% of the country in the 2020 ranking of the best disciplines in China. The school's affiliated hospitals ranked among the top 100 national hospitals in 15 disciplines in the ranking of China's hospital technology influence in 2019.
The school is the supporting unit of the vice chairman of the Chinese Pharmacological Society and the chairman of the Committee of Anesthesiology Pharmacology of the Chinese Pharmacological Society. There are 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 1 joint international cooperation laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 1 collaborative innovation center established by the province and the ministry, 4 provincial key laboratories, provincial clinical medicine centers, engineering research centers and Guizhou Province 2011 7 collaborative innovation centers. In the past five years, he has won 343 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 7 projects from the National Social Science Foundation, and 1 second prize for National Science and Technology Progress; 32 scientific and technological awards of Guizhou Province, including 6 first prizes; and Philosophy of Guizhou Province There are 7 outstanding achievements in social sciences, including 1 second prize and 6 third prizes.

The school actively leverages its resource advantages and actively serves national strategies and local needs. 73 years of undergraduate education, 65 years of master's training and 21 years of joint doctoral training have delivered nearly 80,000 medical talents to the country, active in the medical and health field, and made important contributions to economic and social development and people's health.
