The predecessor of Guizhou Medical University was the National Guiyang Medical College founded in 1938. It was one of the nine national medical colleges under the Ministry of Education at that time. It was renamed Guiyang Medical University in 1950 and Guizhou Medical University in 2015. It is the only provincial key university in Guizhou Province that has a complete medical personnel training system for bachelor-master-doctoral degrees in medicine.

After 80 years of hard work, the school has two campuses in the north and south, covering an area of 1,868 acres. The school attaches great importance to foreign exchanges and cooperation, and has established counterpart assistance relationships with Soochow University, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College.
