Founded in 1902, Guizhou University has gone through the periods of Guizhou University Hall, Provincial Guizhou University, National Guizhou Agricultural and Engineering College, and National Guizhou University. It was named Guizhou University in October 1950. In November 1951, Chairman Mao Zedong wrote the name of "Guizhou University" by himself. In August 1997, it merged with Guizhou Agricultural College and other institutions. In August 2004, it merged with Guizhou University of Technology. In December 2004, it became a university jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Guizhou Province. In September 2005, it became the national "211 Project" university. In September 2012, it was selected as a university in the national "Middle and Western University Comprehensive Strength Enhancement Project". In April 2016, it became a national key construction university of "One Province, One School" in the Midwest. In September 2017, it became a national world-class discipline construction university. In November 2017, it was awarded the first "National Civilized Campus". In February 2018, it became a "Ministry-province Joint Construction" university by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Guizhou Province. In December 2018, it was selected as the fostering and founding unit of the "National Party Building Work Demonstration University". In January 2019, it was selected as a pilot unit for the comprehensive reform of the "Three All-round Education" of the Ministry of Education.
The school covers an area of 4646 acres. The library currently has a collection of more than 3.81 million paper documents and 2.4 million e-books. The school has a complete range of disciplines, covering 12 categories of literature, history, philosophy, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, economics, management, law, education and art. There are 40 colleges under it, with 34,188 full-time undergraduate students and 12,202 graduate students. There are currently 4022 employees, including 2676 full-time teachers.
