Guangxi University was established in Wuzhou in 1928 and became the National Guangxi University in 1939. In the same year, the Agricultural College of Guangxi University became an independent Guangxi Agricultural College. In 1962, Guangxi Forestry College was merged into Guangxi Agricultural College. In 1970, Guangxi Labor University was merged into Guangxi Agricultural College. In 1992, Guangxi Agricultural College was renamed Guangxi Agricultural University. In 1997, Guangxi University merged with Guangxi Agricultural University to form the new Guangxi University.

Guangxi University pioneered higher education in Guangxi.
