Guangdong Sports Vocational and Technical College was established in August 1956, and its predecessor was Guangdong Sports School. In May 2003, it was approved by the Guangdong Provincial People's Government and upgraded to a full-time higher sports vocational college under the Guangdong Provincial Sports Bureau. Since the establishment of the school, a large number of sports stars who have made outstanding contributions to the country have emerged, such as Xian Dongmei, Fu Haifeng, Jiang Jialiang, Sun Caiyun, Xing Fen, and Dong Zhaozhi. In August 2012, approved by the Provincial Institutional Organization Committee, the affiliated athletic sports school of the college was renamed the Guangdong Youth Athletic Sports School and officially operated independently in January 2014.

The college is located in the Olympic Sports Park, Tianhe District, Guangzhou. It covers an area of 306,433 square meters, with a building area of 82111.8 square meters, and has a total fixed asset value of 250 million yuan. At present, there are 10 on-campus training bases, 60 on-campus training rooms, 81 off-campus training bases, 35 industry-university cooperative enterprises, and 51 sports industry vocational skills training bases in 21 prefecture-level cities across the province. The library has a collection of 160,000 books.
The college currently has 285 faculty members, 167 full-time teachers (including 47 teachers with senior professional titles, 7 with a doctorate degree or above), 103 dual-quality teachers (70.3% of the total number of full-time teachers), and employs skilled craftsmen from enterprises in the sports industry. There are 136 part-time teachers outside school. There are 4 outstanding teachers in Nanyue, 1 outstanding educator in Nanyue, and 7 school-level training targets for "Thousand Hundred and Ten" talent training projects. In 2012, he participated in the first National Higher Sports Vocational College Teachers' Fundamental Skills Competition, and his total score ranked among the top three. In the national finals of the National Sports Industry Professional Skills Competition in 2013, he won the first place in the total score of the sports protection project and the second place in the total score of the individual, as well as the first place in the personal total score of the swimming instruction and rescue project. Guangdong Province Sports Industry Special Occupation Skill Appraisal Station is the first sports industry vocational skill appraisal station established in the country. Since the establishment of the station in 2005, the scale of appraisal has been ranked first in the country. As of the end of 2017, the appraisal station has carried out a total of 1405 projects in four major types of work including swimming lifeguards, social sports instructors (swimming, aerobics, fitness coaches, tennis, martial arts, taekwondo), sports agents, and sports groundwork. The batch appraisal, with 73,174 appraisal persons, built a good platform for the sports market practitioners in the province to obtain the national professional qualification certificate, and further protected the people's fitness rights. At present, the appraisal station has built 51 national vocational qualification training bases in the whole province, realizing the training network covering the whole province. A total of 457 trainers of various projects and 216 national assessors have been trained, and the team of experts is growing day by day. In 2012, the appraisal station was rated as the first batch of “demonstration vocational skill appraisal stations” by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, and the only demonstration station in the national sports system; in 2013, it was appraised as the “2009-2012 National Masses” by the State Sports General Administration. Guangdong National Fitness and Physical Rehabilitation Center focuses on the comprehensive promotion of modern physical training concepts and methods, with the goal of cultivating high-quality and skilled sports talents, strengthens support services for national scientific fitness, and cultivates fitness guidance and physical rehabilitation training talents.
