Shantou Vocational and Technical College was approved by the People’s Government of Guangdong Province on March 29, 2002. It is sponsored by the People’s Government of Shantou. It has advanced training in the former Shantou Education College (including Shantou Preschool Teachers School), Shantou Commercial Supply and Marketing School, Shantou Mechanical and Electrical School, and Shantou City Teachers. The college originally covers an area of about 632.4 acres. In March 2009, the city government has granted 619.1 acres of land to the college for expansion, and the college occupies a total of 1251.5 acres. The college is composed of four campuses: the main campus, Jinyuan campus, Xinjin campus and Dongdun campus. The headquarters of the college is located at the foothills of Donghu Mountain in Haojiang District, Shantou City. It currently has 436.4 acres of land, plus the expansion land, covering a total area of 1055.5 acres; Jinyuan campus is located at Jinyuan Road, Shantou City, the former Shantou Institute of Education and Shantou Preschool Teachers School. It covers an area of 56.1 mu; Xinjin campus is located outside Longhu District, Shantou, covering an area of 115 mu; Dongdun campus is located at No. 8, Dangxiao Road, Shantou, covering an area of 24.9 mu. The total construction area of the college is 235,000 square meters, the total value of teaching and experimental practice equipment is about 40.34 million yuan, and the book collection is 803,500.
The college currently has 13,156 full-time college and technical secondary school students. There are more than 2,000 adult college students, undergraduate and postgraduate students jointly run. There are 710 faculty members, including 107 with master's degree or above. In addition, the college also hires a group of business people and engineers with rich practical experience as part-time teachers.

The college actively integrates with international advanced education, and has signed cooperative education agreements with Hooverhamton University in the United Kingdom and the University of Ballarat in Australia. After three-year junior college students graduate, they can directly enter the two universities to study for undergraduates (one year) to obtain a bachelor’s degree , And can continue to study for master's and doctoral degrees.
