The college is a full-time public higher education institution approved by the People's Government of Guangdong Province in 1985 and filed by the Ministry of Education. At the beginning of its establishment, the college was named Guangdong Institute of Advanced Education for Science and Technology Cadres. It was mainly responsible for the continuing education and training tasks of Guangdong Science and Technology Management Cadres. It was hailed by the Ministry of Science and Technology as "a jewel of local continuing education." In 1989, it was renamed as Guangdong Academy of Science and Technology Cadres. In 1996, it became one of the first colleges and universities in Guangdong Province to hold general higher vocational education. In 2001, it cooperated with the Zhuhai Municipal Government to build the Zhuhai campus. In 2003, approved by the Ministry of Education, it was restructured from an adult college to a general higher education institution, and continued to undertake the task of training scientific and technological cadres. In May 2008, the college was transferred from the Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology to the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education.
