Founded in 1956, Guangzhou Institute of Physical Education is the only independent university in South China that has undergraduate and graduate education. The school has about 8,000 students and more than 900 postgraduates. It has jointly run a school with the National Sports General Administration's Handball Baseball Center to train postgraduates, and jointly cultivates doctoral students with Shanghai University of Sport.
