To the south of the Five Ridges and on the coast of the South China Sea, Guangdong is the southern gate of China. It has been communicating with the world through the sea since the Qin and Han dynasties. At the beginning of the Western Jin Dynasty, Guangzhou became the main port of the Maritime Silk Road, the largest port in China in the Tang and Song Dynasties, and the only foreign trade port in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It has a unique geographical location advantage and profound cultural and historical accumulation. Guangdong, which is the first to gain the ethos, to lead the new era, and to take the road of change, is the forerunner in the process of great changes in modern China.


   Broad-mindedness, all-inclusiveness, and innovation and change are the important characteristics of Cantonese and Lingnan culture. Modern and contemporary art in Guangdong is inherited from the spirit of Lingnan culture. In 1887, Chinese oil painting pioneer Li Tiefu went abroad to study painting. In 1917, Zheng Jin, a native of Guangdong, was ordered to build China's first national art school-the National Beijing Art School. In 1921, the first art group that studied Western painting appeared in Guangdong-Chisha. In 1922, Guangzhou Municipal Art School was established, which was one of the earliest public art schools in China. In 1928, Lin Fengmian went to Hangzhou to prepare for the establishment of the National Academy of Art. In addition, many Cantonese artists such as Gao Jianfu, Feng Gangbai, Hu Gentian, Guan Liang, etc. are all respectable forerunners of modern Chinese art education.


  Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, as the only independent higher art institution in southern China and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, is tied to this cultural bloodline.


   The predecessor of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts was the Central South Academy of Fine Arts. It was established in Wuhan, Hubei Province with the approval of the Ministry of Higher Education in 1953. At that time, it was formed by the merger of the Central South Academy of Arts and Sciences, South China People’s Academy of Literature and Art, Guangxi Provincial Academy of Arts and other related departments. In 1958, the Zhongnan Academy of Fine Arts moved from Wuhan to Guangzhou and was renamed Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. In 1981, he was awarded the first batch of master's degree grant rights in the country. In 1987, it began to recruit students from foreign countries and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. In 2005, it was approved as the first batch of national master of arts (MFA) training pilot units. In 2010, it was designated as a provincial doctoral program by Guangdong Province. unit.

   School scale In 2004, the school built a new campus in Guangzhou University Town. There are two campuses, Changgang and University Town, covering a total area of 564 acres and a total construction area of 411,884 square meters. The school has 8 colleges and 1 ideological and political theory teaching department. Undergraduate education has 31 majors and 55 majors, and 24 majors have been enrolled. As of the end of September 2017, the school has 5,303 undergraduates, 721 postgraduates, 16 international students, 1 general preparatory student, and 6,041 full-time students, which is equivalent to 7,140 students.


The subject professional school currently has 3 provincial-level key disciplines for peak climbing, including 2 first-level disciplines of "Fine Arts" and "Design" and 1 second-level discipline of "Arts and Crafts", and 3 provincial-level characteristic key disciplines, including "Arts" "Study Theory" is a first-level discipline and "Art Theory and Criticism" and "Film and Digital Media" are two second-level disciplines. In the fourth round of discipline assessment by the Ministry of Education in 2017, the school's two first-level disciplines, "Fine Arts" and "Design" were rated as B+, and "Art Theory" was rated as B-level, ranking first among similar disciplines in universities in Guangdong Province. , The country ranks in the forefront.


As of January 2018, among the school’s 24 undergraduate majors that have been enrolled, there are 1 national-level professional comprehensive reform pilot program major, 3 national-level characteristic majors, 8 provincial-level characteristic majors, 1 provincial-level key major, and provincial key majors. There are 6 pilot projects for comprehensive reform of majors at the provincial level, and 2 pilot programs for the training of applied talents at the provincial level. The total number of national and provincial high-quality majors is 14, accounting for 58.33% of the total number of enrolled majors.


   Teachers The school has a strong teaching staff. Hu Yichuan, Guan Shanyue, Li Xiongcai, Wang Zhaomin, Gao Yongjian, Chi Ke, Chen Shaofeng, Pan He, Yang Zhiguang, Guo Shaogang, Chen Jinzhang, Liang Mingcheng, Yin Dingbang, Wang Shouzhi, Zhang Zhian, Liming, Zhao Jian, Fang Chuxiong, Guo Runwen, Li Jinkun, etc. Many masters in contemporary Chinese art history have been teaching in our school for a long time. The school currently has 67 professors and 156 associate professors. Among the faculty, there are a team of national colleges and universities Huang Danian-style teachers, national "Ten Thousand Talents Program" leading talents, "four batches" of talents from the Central Propaganda Department, experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, outstanding talents in the new century from the Ministry of Education, and subject review by the State Council Group members, members of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, director and deputy director of the Art Committee of the Chinese Artists Association, and directors of various Chinese art and design professional societies.


   Talent training The school insists on taking talent training as its fundamental task, actively deepens the reform of education and teaching, and continuously improves the quality of education and teaching. In 2016, the school was awarded the "Third Batch of Guangdong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Demonstration Schools". In the past three evaluations of teaching achievement awards, he won 3 first prizes and 3 second prizes in Guangdong Province.   Platform construction The school attaches great importance to the construction of a three-dimensional and diversified collaborative education platform. In recent years, a total of 31 platforms have been built at the national and provincial levels.
