The predecessor of the school was the Guangdong Provincial Senior Fisheries Vocational School founded in 1935. She is the origin of modern marine fishery education in Guangdong. After several migrations, she was upgraded and developed into Zhanjiang Fisheries College directly under the Ministry of Agriculture. In January 1997, Zhanjiang Fisheries College, which has a 62-year history of running a school, and Zhanjiang Agricultural College, which has a 39-year history of running a school, substantially merged to form Zhanjiang Ocean University.
