Guangdong University of Foreign Studies

Guangdong University of Foreign Studies is a key university in Guangdong Province with distinctive international characteristics. It is an important base for the training of international talents in South China, foreign language culture, foreign economics and trade, and international strategic research. At present, there are 19,985 full-time undergraduates, 3103 doctoral and master candidates, and more than 11,000 adult undergraduates, advanced training and trainees, and foreign students.


  History


The predecessor of    school was Guangzhou Foreign Languages Institute and Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade. Guangzhou Foreign Languages Institute was established in November 1964 and officially enrolled in July 1965. It is one of 36 universities directly under the former State Education Commission (now Ministry of Education). Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade was established in December 1980. It is a college directly under the former Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (now the Ministry of Commerce) and one of the founding units of the national international economics and trade discipline. In May 1995, the People's Government of Guangdong Province merged the two universities to form Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. In October 2008, Guangdong Vocational College of Finance and Economics was incorporated into Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.


   Campus situation


The school is located in Guangzhou, a famous historical and cultural city in China and the economic center of South China. It has 3 campuses with a total area of 2292 acres. The north campus is located at the northern foot of Baiyun Mountain in Guangzhou, covering an area of 939 acres; the south campus is located in Guangzhou University Town, covering an area of 1095. The Dalang campus is located in Dalang, Guangzhou, covering an area of 258 acres. The campus is lined with trees, bridges and flowing water, birds and flowers are scented, and the environment is elegant.


   Faculty


   Since the establishment of the school, Liang Zongdai, Gui Shichun, Li Xiaoju and other famous teachers have gathered in the school to teach and study, and have accumulated a wealth of spiritual and cultural wealth for the school. The school has a total of 1,980 faculty members and 1,326 full-time teachers. Among them, the proportion of professors and associate professors reaches 50.98%, and the proportion of masters and above reaches 92.91%. Among the faculty, there are 1 member of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council Discipline Evaluation Group, 16 members of the Professional Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, 12 members of the State Council Government Special Allowance, and 2 members of the National Cultural Masters and the "Four Batches" Talent Project. 2 leading talents in philosophy and social sciences of the "Ten Thousand Talents Program", 4 national candidates selected for the "New Century Talent Project", 13 people selected for the "New Century Excellent Talents Support Program" of the Ministry of Education, and "High-end" by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs One person was funded by the "Foreign Experts" project, and one person was funded by the "Thousand Talents Program" project.   Disciplinary Development


   The school has formed a "two-wheel drive", multi-disciplinary and multi-lingual coordinated and sustainable development of foreign language subjects and non-foreign language subjects. It has 25 teaching units and an independent college (Nanguo Business School). There are 72 undergraduate majors, which are divided into eight disciplines: literature, economics, management, law, engineering, science, education, and art. Among them, there are 2 national-level professional comprehensive reform pilots, 14 provincial-level professional comprehensive reform pilots, 8 national-level characteristic professional construction sites (including 11 majors), and 18 provincial-level characteristic professional construction points (including 21 majors) , 3 provincial key majors. There are a total of 26 foreign languages, making it the most foreign language school in South China. The school was granted the right to confer master's degrees in 1981 and the right to confer doctoral degrees in 1986. It is an earlier unit that was granted the right to confer master's and doctoral degrees after the restoration of the graduate school system in China. The school currently has 1 national key discipline and 7 provincial key disciplines. It has 1 post-doctoral research station, 2 first-level discipline doctoral programs, 12 second-level discipline doctoral programs, 12 first-level discipline master programs, 47 second-level discipline master programs, and 11 professional degree master programs. In several rounds of subject evaluation organized by the Ministry of Education's Degree and Graduate Education Development Center, our school's foreign language and literature subjects are among the top universities in the country. Two disciplines, "Construction of a foreign language and literature innovation system for international language services" and "Construction of an integrated innovation system for economics and management disciplines serving the major strategic needs of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road" were selected as key discipline construction projects for high-level universities in Guangdong Province.

Practicing the school motto of "Being Moral and Acting, Studying Chinese and Western", with the mission of cultivating high-quality citizens of globalization, focusing on promoting the deep integration of professional teaching and foreign language teaching, and cultivating "double high" (high ideological quality and high professional level) , "Two Powers" (strong cross-cultural communication ability, strong practical innovation ability), an international talent with an international vision, proficient in international rules, able to directly participate in international cooperation and competition, and a sense of social responsibility. The school is one of the three cooperative institutions in China of the United Nations High-end Translators Training University Extension Program in China. It is the pioneer unit of the World Translation Education Alliance (WITTA) and the permanent location of the secretariat. A member of the Federation of Translation and Interpretation (FIT), it is the only foreign language school selected for the "Asian Campus" project initiated by the heads of Japan and South Korea. It has a training base for non-universal foreign language undergraduate talents in ordinary universities of the Ministry of Education-Non-universal language teaching and research center, Ministry of Education talent training model innovation experimental zone-international business talent training model innovation experimental zone, national experimental teaching demonstration center- -Simultaneous Interpretation Experimental Teaching Center, Guangdong Collaborative Education Platform-Multilingual Advanced Translation Talents Collaborative Education Base and International Service Outsourcing Talents Collaborative Education Base. In 2017, the overall employment rates of undergraduates and postgraduates in our school were 99.54% and 99.77%, respectively, and continue to be among the top universities in the country. The school recruits students from more than 20 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the Central Government and Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan regions across the country, and the enrollment batches are the first batch.

Up to now, it has cooperated with the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Portugal, Finland, Iceland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Russia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, South Korea, North Korea 374 universities and academic and cultural institutions in 53 countries and regions including Chile, Peru, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, Colombia, Israel, Egypt, Cape Verde, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan have established cooperative and exchange relations. Our school currently runs 5 overseas Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms: Confucius Institute at the University of Sapporo in Japan, Confucius Institute at Ural University in Russia, Confucius Institute at Catholic University of Santa Maria in Peru, Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Verde, and Ain Shams University in Egypt Confucius Classroom. In addition, the school also cooperates with the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom to hold a master's degree education program in English teaching, cooperates with the University of Reading in the United Kingdom to hold a master's degree education program in English education, and cooperates with the University of Coimbra in Portugal to hold a master's degree education program in Portuguese.
