The predecessor of Lanzhou Petrochemical Vocational and Technical College was the Lanzhou Petroleum School of the Ministry of Petroleum and the Lanzhou Chemical School of the Ministry of Chemical Industry, as well as the Lanlian Workers University and Lanhua Workers University, which were established in 1956. In 1984, it was directly under the Sinopec Corporation; in 2000, it was transferred to Gansu Province; in 1999, it was transformed into Lanzhou Petrochemical Vocational and Technical College with the approval of the Ministry of Education. It was the first independent higher vocational and technical college in Gansu Province; passed ISO9001 in 2005 :2000 international quality management system certification; in 2006, it was identified as the first batch of 28 national exemplary higher vocational colleges by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance; in 2016, it was identified as a "double first-class" university project institution by the Gansu Provincial People's Government In 2010, with the approval of the Gansu Provincial Government, Gansu Institute of Industrial Technicians was established in the college.
Lanzhou Petrochemical Vocational and Technical College was established with the construction of the first modern oil refinery and the first chemical industrial base in New China. It spanned two centuries and is the first vocational college in the petrochemical industry in New China. Since the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the school, more than 100,000 construction talents represented by the iron man Wang Jinxi have been trained for the petrochemical industry of the motherland and the local construction of Gansu Province. The history of this school is the history of the national petrochemical industry. In accordance with the requirement of "Establishing a scientific ideological system for the life-long growth of students" proposed by General Secretary Xi Jinping at the National Conference on Ideological and Political Work of Colleges and Universities, the college strives to lay a scientific ideological system for the life-long growth of vocational students, and strives to train students to be both professional and talented. We must also be spiritually mature, and strive to train students to become artisans that the country urgently needs. The college has trained outstanding national Communists, representatives of the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, representatives of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, chief technician of Sinopec Group, Zhang Hengzhen who wrote the legend of "Stone Chemical Craftsman", as well as "Leak Stopping King" and "Potassium Expert" , "Speaking with data", "Chief interpreter", and a large number of craftsmen who are professional and spiritual. As the executive deputy secretary of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association Zeng Jian and other industry experts said: "Lanzhou Petrochemical Vocational and Technical College is the most influential, most comprehensive, professional, and best-employed school in the petroleum and chemical industry in the country. It is a veritable "craftsman cradle" and "Whampoa Military Academy" for petrochemical vocational education."
The school is located in the geometric center of China's territory-Jincheng Lanzhou, adjacent to the Lanzhou Petrochemical Company, known as the "Cradle of the New China Petrochemical Industry" and "the eldest son of the Republic". It has a building area of 300,000 square meters, and has 57 on-campus training bases and 150. The experimental training room has 154 stable off-campus training and practice bases in well-known companies such as PetroChina Lanzhou Petrochemical Company. The net asset value of the school exceeds 700 million yuan, and the total value of various training and experimental equipment is 170 million yuan.
There are 635 full-time teachers in the school. Among them: 68 professors, 230 associate professors, 360 doctors and masters, 322 "dual-qualified" teachers, and 208 part-time teachers. 4 teachers won the title of Huang Yanpei's Outstanding Teacher of Vocational Education; the school teacher also won the second prize of the Natural Science Award of the Ministry of Education, the second prize of the Gansu Natural Science Award, the second prize of the Dunhuang Literature and Art Award, the Iron Humanity Award, etc.; won the National Excellent Course 1 course, 25 provincial-level quality courses, and 13 provincial-level quality resource sharing courses.
The school now has the School of Petrochemical Engineering, the School of Applied Chemical Engineering, the School of Mechanical Engineering, the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, the School of Information Processing and Control Engineering, the School of Automotive Engineering, the School of International Business, the School of Humanities, the School of Marxism, the School of International Education, and the School of Civil Engineering. There are 12 secondary colleges, including the College and the School of Printing and Publishing Engineering, 6 research institutes (offices), including the Adult and Vocational Training College, and petrochemical technology, and 15 enterprise technology R&D centers.
The school recruits students from 27 provinces, cities, and autonomous regions across the country. It can recruit 82 majors and professional directions, including 4 national demonstration majors, 5 Gansu demonstration majors, and 8 Gansu characteristic majors. There are more than 14,000 full-time students in school, and more than 6,000 adult education and short-term training students. In recent years, the school has adhered to the school-running philosophy of “following the laws, pursuing characteristics, combining production and education, and highlighting skills”, actively explored the laws of higher vocational education, and vigorously promoted education and teaching reforms. The one-time employment rate of graduates has exceeded 96% for 10 consecutive years.
