Lanzhou Jiaotong University (formerly Lanzhou Railway Institute) was founded in May 1958. It was formed by the relocation of the main departments of Beijing Railway Institute (now Beijing Jiaotong University) and Tangshan Railway Institute (now Southwest Jiaotong University). The three railway undergraduate universities were originally affiliated to the Ministry of Railways. In 2000, a system of "co-construction between the central and local governments, with local government management as the mainstay" was implemented. In April 2003, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, "Lanzhou Railway Institute" was renamed "Lanzhou Jiaotong University".

school is one of the first universities in my country with the right to grant master's degree. In 2003, it became a doctoral degree granting unit.
