Sunshine College is located in Fuzhou, a famous historical and cultural city in China, and its campus is located in the Fuzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone. In 2001, it was co-organized by Fuzhou University and Sunshine Holding Group, a key construction university of the national "211 Project". It was the first batch of independent colleges established in Fujian Province. In 2015, it was approved by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and became the first batch of ordinary colleges and universities in Fujian Province to be converted into independent establishments. In 2016, it was approved as an application-oriented transformation pilot university by the Provincial Department of Education. In 2017, it was listed as a master's degree granting and training unit by the Provincial Department of Education.

It owns six major groups including Longjing Environmental Protection, Sunshine Education, Sunshine City, Sunshine Finance, Sunshine Products, and Sunshine Capital. The school makes full use of the industry background and resource advantages of the organizer, Sunshine Holdings, to form an interoperable industry-education community. It co-organizes civil engineering experimental classes and financial management experimental classes with Sunshine City, and builds a next-generation network country with Xingwang Ruijie. The local joint engineering laboratory, and Sunshine Preschool Education Group jointly established the preschool education college, and the Sunshine Property Co., Ltd. jointly established the property management major. A total of more than 100 units have established school-enterprise partnerships, and seven industrial colleges have been established successively. Five major application-oriented professional groups for the service industry have been established. The school actively meets the needs of regional economic and social development and strengthens the construction of scientific research and innovation systems. Since 2010, the school has undertaken nearly 170 projects from the National Social Science Foundation, the National Natural Science Foundation, and the Ministry of Education's humanities and social sciences planning projects.
