Huaqiao University is a general higher education institution directly under the United Front Work Department of the Central Committee and jointly built by the United Front Work Department of the Central Committee, the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Fujian Province. It is a national Chinese education base, a national university student cultural quality education base, a national model university for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, and a national university teacher assessment reform model school.
In 1960, with the approval of Premier Zhou Enlai, the school was founded in Quanzhou, Fujian, with Liao Chengzhi as the first principal. It ceased operations in 1970 and resumed operations in 1978. In 1983, it was designated by the Party Central Committee as a "National Key Support University". In 1996, it was jointly established by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and the People's Government of Fujian Province. In 1997, the original Jimei Overseas Chinese Student Tutorial School was merged into the School of Chinese Language and Culture of Huaqiao University. The Xiamen campus was opened in 2006. In 2003, he was awarded the excellent grade in the first batch of undergraduate teaching work evaluation by the Ministry of Education. In 2018, it was selected as a "double first-class" construction university in Fujian Province.
The school established a board of directors in 1980, with Zhuang Xiquan, Hu Ping, Huang Changxi, Jia Qinglin, Chen Mingyi, Song Defu, and Wang Gang successively serving as chairman of the board. The current chairman is Cai Dafeng, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and chairman of the Democratic Progressive Central Committee. The honorary chairman is Ho Houhua, the vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the former chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region.
There are more than 2,800 faculty members. Among the more than 1,700 full-time teachers, 55% have senior professional titles, 65% have doctorate degrees, 38% have overseas study experience, and 67% are young and middle-aged teachers under 45. There are 6 dual-employed academicians, more than one hundred high-level talents such as national leading talents, and many high-level research teams such as the innovation team in key areas of the "Innovative Talent Promotion Plan" of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
The school insists on cultivating high-quality talents with innovative spirit, practical ability, international vision and social responsibility. A total of more than 200,000 talents of various types have been trained, of which more than 50,000 are distributed in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and overseas, becoming friendly envoys promoting Sino-foreign exchanges and cooperation. There are 25,700 full-time general undergraduates, 4,338 postgraduates, and 6,140 students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and more than 80 countries. It is one of the universities with the largest number of overseas students in the country. There are 26 colleges and 90 departments (departments, centers). There are 18 national-level first-class undergraduate majors, 26 provincial-level first-rate undergraduate majors, and 17 majors have passed international and domestic professional certification. There are 18 national-level first-class undergraduate courses and 92 provincial-level first-rate undergraduate courses. There are more than 80 teaching and research platforms above the provincial and ministerial level, such as the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center, the Provincial and Ministry Co-constructed Collaborative Innovation Center, the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center, the Virtual Simulation Experimental Center, and the Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center.
The school strengthens the construction of disciplines and forms a discipline layout of infiltration of liberal arts and sciences, integration of science and engineering, integration of industry and management, and coordinated development, covering 11 disciplines. There are 8 first-level discipline doctoral programs, 25 first-level discipline master programs, 21 professional degree master programs, and 5 post-doctoral mobile stations. It has 41 national, provincial and ministerial-level key disciplines, and 17 high-level plateau disciplines in Fujian Province. Engineering discipline ranks in the top 5‰ of the ESI world rankings, and the three disciplines of chemistry, materials science, and computer science rank among the top 1% of ESI.
The school attaches great importance to academic research, and continuously enhances technological innovation and cultural innovation capabilities. The number of projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation and Social Science Fund each year ranks among the top universities in Fujian Province. The scientific research results completed by the host have won awards such as the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and related academic papers have been published in journals such as Nature and Chinese Social Sciences. For four consecutive years, it has entered the annual list of the top 100 in the natural index. Two professors have been successively selected into the list of "Highly Cited Scientists" in the world.
The school actively develops social services, promotes innovation in the integration of production and education, and contributes to building a well-off society in an all-round way. Take root in the land of Bamin, and help Fujian Province to promote high-quality development and transcendence in an all-round way. Presided over the entrusted legislative projects such as the "Regulations on the Promotion of Ecological Civilization Construction in Fujian Province", participated in the related works of Xiamen and Quanzhou, and worked with local governments to promote the construction of Quanzhou’s "Belt and Road" Qiaoze Park and Xiamen Automobile Town, and create the "Hua Da Lecture Hall" "Jimei Lecture Hall" high-end learning platform. The school vigorously promotes international exchanges and cooperation, and has signed cooperation agreements with more than 210 universities, scientific research institutions and government departments in 46 countries and regions on five continents. As a Chinese government scholarship to study in China, it has established 90 offices or admissions agencies around the world.
The school adheres to the school-running policy of "facing overseas, facing Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan", adhering to the school-running mission of "serving overseas Chinese and spreading Chinese culture", implementing the school-running philosophy of "connecting China and foreign countries, and cultivating moral talents", and strives to serve the country's overseas Chinese affairs and public diplomacy. Work to help the construction of the “Belt and Road”. The "Overseas Chinese Blue Book" has been published for ten consecutive years. The Maritime Silk Road Research Institute has been selected by the National Development and Reform Commission's "Belt and Road" most influential university think tank for three consecutive years, and has been selected as the "Belt and Road" research characteristic think tank of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Evaluation. The Thailand Research Center was selected as the National and Regional Research Center of the Ministry of Education, the Malaysian Research Center was selected as the National and Regional Research Center of the National Civil Affairs Commission, and the Overseas Chinese Research Institute and the Urban Construction and Economic Development Research Institute were selected as key think tanks in Fujian Province. To promote people-to-people communication, the "Chinese Language Study Class for Foreign Government Officials" has been held for 15 consecutive years to cultivate a large number of outstanding talents dedicated to promoting Sino-foreign friendship for countries along the "Belt and Road". Vigorously promote Chinese education, train teachers, compile teaching materials, and carry out traditional Chinese cultural experience for more than 570 Chinese schools in 55 countries around the world, and help the standardization, regularization and professionalization of Chinese education in the country.
The school pays attention to cultural education, builds a campus culture of “unity-led, diversified integration, and harmony but difference”. It is selected as the national university Chinese excellent traditional culture inheritance base. It has won the first prize of national university campus culture construction outstanding achievements for two consecutive years, forming a "chengzhi" · Cultural brands such as "Grand View Garden of Traditional Culture" and "Wonderful Asia · Dialogue Civilization". The student men's basketball team won the championship of the Chinese University Basketball League for the ninth time, representing China's first victory in the World University Basketball League Championship.
The school has campuses in Quanzhou and Xiamen, with a total area of 2,147,800 square meters, a building area of 1,073 million square meters, and 4.965 million volumes of various books and materials.
