Chongqing Jiaotong University is a multidisciplinary university with distinctive transportation characteristics and a focus on engineering. In 1951, according to Chairman Mao's instructions, the Southwest Military and Political Committee led by Liu Bocheng and Deng Xiaoping founded a school for the construction of the Kham-Tibet Highway and the construction of the Great Southwest. It was called the Southwest Transportation College. In 1960, Chongqing Jiaotong University was established, and the Civil Engineering Department of Chengdu Institute of Technology, the Metallurgy Department of Sichuan Metallurgical Institute, and the Hydraulic Engineering Department of Wuhan Water Transport Institute were successively merged. In 2000, the school was transferred from the Ministry of Communications to the management of Chongqing Municipality to jointly build colleges and universities for the province and the ministry. In 2006, it was renamed Chongqing Jiaotong University and added as a doctoral institution.
The school conditions are relatively complete. There are three campuses, Nan'an, Science City, and Daping, covering an area of more than 3,000 acres. The school’s total fixed assets are 3.617 billion yuan, the school building area is more than 820,000 square meters, and the collection of paper and electronic documents is more than 4.4 million volumes (species). There are more than 1,500 periodicals and magazines, more than 100 Chinese and foreign language databases, and a total value of 665 million yuan in various instruments and equipment. It has 1 national and 6 municipal experimental teaching demonstration centers.
The quality of the teaching staff is excellent. The school attaches great importance to international cooperation and exchanges, and has established friendly cooperative relations with nearly 100 universities and research institutes in more than 30 countries. Initiated the establishment of the "One Belt One Road" China-Poland-Poland (Lan) University Alliance, and has always served as the rotating chairman. The school has two Confucius Institutes in Benin, Africa and the United States, and two national and regional research centers registered by the Ministry of Education, including the European Research Center and the Benin Research Center.
