Southwest University of Political Science and Law is located in Chongqing, a famous historical and cultural city and the only municipality in the central and western regions. It is the earliest institution of higher politics and law established in New China. The predecessor of the school was the Southwest People's Revolutionary University founded in 1950 with Marshal Liu Bocheng as the principal. In 1953, the Southwest School of Political Science and Law was established on the basis of the Department of Political Science and Law of Southwest People's Revolutionary University. Mr. Guo Moruo wrote the name of the college. The first dean was General Zhou Baozhong, the former anti-Japanese national hero and the former commander of the Second Route Army of the Northeast Anti-Japanese Allied Forces. In 1978, the school was designated as a national key university by the State Council; in 1993, it was approved as a doctoral degree authorized unit by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council; in 1995, it was renamed Southwest University of Political Science and Law with the approval of the former State Education Commission. In 2003, it was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to be the first batch of authorized units for doctoral degrees in the first-level discipline of law; in 2004, it was approved by the Ministry of Personnel to set up a postdoctoral research station in law; in 2012, it was approved by the CPC Central Committee for Political Science and Law and the Ministry of Education. The school has three campuses: Shapingba campus, Yubei campus and Baoshenghu campus, covering an area of more than 3,000 acres. Among them, the Yubei campus is the undergraduate and graduate education and teaching center, the Shapingba campus is the continuing education and cadre training base, and the Baoshenghu campus is the scientific research, innovation and entrepreneurship base. There are more than 23,000 students and more than 2,000 faculty members. The school now has five departments: the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Faculty of Politics and Education, the Faculty of Economics and Management, and the Faculty of New Science. The school currently has 28 undergraduate majors, including 6 national-level first-class undergraduate majors, including law, journalism, political science and administration, ideological and political education, radio and television, and administrative management, and 9 provincial-level first-rate undergraduate majors. There are currently 2 first-level discipline doctorate authorization points in law and journalism, 18 second-level discipline doctorate authorization points, 8 first-level discipline master degree authorization points, 44 second-level discipline master degree authorization points, and 8 master's degrees Professional degree authorization point. Economic law and procedural law are national key disciplines, and 9 disciplines, including law, journalism and communication, applied economics, political science, public management, philosophy, Marxist theory, public security, and business administration, are the focus of Chongqing’s 13th Five-Year Plan Subject. In 2017, in the fourth round of subject evaluation by the Ministry of Education, our school's law disciplines and four universities including Peking University and Tsinghua University were jointly shortlisted for A-level disciplines, becoming the only A-level discipline in Chongqing. In 2018, in the country's first professional degree level evaluation, the professional degree authorization point of our school of law, together with Tsinghua University, Wuhan University and other universities, was awarded an A rating. It is also the only professional degree authorization point in Chongqing that has entered the A rating.

The school adheres to the international development strategy, has established exchanges and cooperation with more than 180 universities or institutions in nearly 40 countries and regions along the "Belt and Road" route, and has carried out more than 120 student exchange projects.
